Outcome 2 Religious Traditions in Australia
On completion of this unit the student should be able to explain the expression of collective identity of particular religious traditions in Australia, and the interaction of these traditions with other religious traditions and wider society.
There two Assessment Tasks associated with this Outcome:
- Analysis of a Ritual (Term 2)
The first is associated with the vital and definitive role that ritual plays in understanding collective identity.
- Analytical Response: Is Australia a Religious Country? (Term 3)
The second is a broader look at the way religious traditions impact on Australian society. This includes the use of statistical data as well as analysis of the interactions between religions and between religious traditions and Australian society in general.

You are to write a short reflective essay of approximately 800 words on a ritual you have studied. Set the essay out with the structure listed below.
Choose a Ritual from Judaism or Islam
The content of each paragraph is suggested by the ‘Topic’ and the dot points listed. The word content of each paragraph is only a guide.
Essay Structure and Content
Paragraph 1: Introduction (150 words)
Topic: The nature and purpose of rituals in religious traditions in general
· Define the nature and purpose of Ritual
· List some different rituals from different religions

· What is the ritual?

· What is the significance of the ritual in the life of the tradition?
· In what parts of the ritual is the community aspect most evident?
· How does the tradition perceive itself in Australia?
Paragraph 5: Conclusion (50 words)
Conclude your essay with a summary of your findings and any opinion you wish to express.

Year 11 RE Assessment Task 3 Analytical Response: Is Australia a Religious Country?
A Graph and an Essay of 600 words
Students are required to complete a graph and an essay of not less than 600 words.
This task assessed the degree to which the student is able to demonstrate the ability to:
- Introduction (50 words)
- Accurately graph and analyse the current distribution of religions in Australia. (Graph & 100 words)
- Describe three aspects of religion and spirituality that impact on Australian society (300 words)
- Identify ways in which religious communities interact with other traditions - Interfaith Dialogue and Ecumenism. (100 words)
- Conclusion (50 words)
