What is Spirituality?

Spirituality concerns that 'ancient and primal search for meaning' (O'Murchu, 1997, p. vii) that began with the emergence of humans at least 70,000 years ago. It is the nature of being human that we puzzle about the big questions of life. Since the very beginning of human life, people have wondered about the meaning of life, about the purpose and destiny of their existence and that of their universe. They form beliefs about whether there is a world beyond this world, whether there is a loving Supreme Being who cares for the universe, and whether it matters if we live our lives in pursuit of good or evil. Many scholars argue that the need to seek answers to these questions is just as real a dimension of the person as is the need to eat, sleep, learn, love and be loved.
Here are some definitions of spirituality
  • Spirituality is concern for the ultimate meaning and purpose of life
  • Spirituality is the feelings, acts and experiences of individuals in their solitude, so far as they apprehend themselves to stand in relation to whatever they may consider the divine
  • Spirituality is "a form of knowledge that is essential to the development of any mature understanding"
  • Spirituality is something biologically built into the human species, an holistic awareness of reality which is potentially to be found in every human being
