The development of this VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) RE program has been based around three principles drawn from the Catholic tradition. It is these three principles that have shaped the possible content and learning activities.

The three Fundamental Principles are:
  • Christians value the sacredness of human life created in the image and continuing to grow in the likeness of God.
  • We live in an interconnected world, which calls us to respect and act for justice for all creation.
  • We live in a pluralistic and secular culture. People’s spirituality, customs and way of life are informed by their particular religious and/or  non-religious worldviews.

Courses are designed with VCAL Levels of Achievement and processes of applied learning principles in mind along with the fundamental principles and enduring understandings and Shared Christian Praxis from the Awakenings Religious Education Curriculum. VCAL RE Courses at Damascus College cross reference learning outcomes from the Personal Development Skills strand of the VCAL.

There are three levels of achievement in VCAL
  • Foundation
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced
